In the fall of 1998 we began homeschooling. We had 4 children at the time: a 6-month-old, kindergartener, 2nd grader and 4th grader. The oldest 2 had been in a private school up to that point. We didn't start homeschooling because we were unhappy with the school. We had decided when they were all preschoolers that we wanted them to have a Christian education, but when Keith suggested we could homeschool and eliminate the cost of a private school, I laughed! I told him that I just wanted them to go away for a little while now and then.

One year later Keith was out of the Navy, in a low-paying job and we were living with my mother. I started working part-time - first at McDonald's, then at Wal-Mart. A year after that we moved into our own house, and 5 months after that I started to work full-time at our church's child care center. This eliminated a major problem we had with transportation issues between our two jobs and getting the boys to school, but I suddenly had NO time with my children and it was tearing me up, but we saw no way out. I was starting to seriously consider and research homeschooling. But I had to work. My position as a permanent staff member gained us a 40% tuition discount for the boys at the school and my daughter attended the child care center for free. The children and I traveled to and from the same place each day, which allowed Keith to take over-time whenever it came up. We got into a routine that wasn't too bad, but not what we really wanted. In 1997 through a series of events that would be called chance by some, but we credit to the hand of God, Keith got the job he had wanted 3 years earlier. Because of that, I was able to quit my job at the end of the year and be a stay-at-home mom once again! Two months later baby 4 was born and when that school year ended we didn't re-enroll the kids in the school. Our other dream was to live in the country, and the new job's location was going to allow that, too. Near the end of summer we found this house, sold the other, and moved in on Halloween of 1998.

The first books I read learning about homeschooling were from Dr. Raymond and Dorothy Moore. They were one of the first advocates of homeschooling over 50 years ago. The Successful Homeschool Family Handbook and Home Style Teaching helped me to get a vision for homeschooling and helped me to realize that this was something I could actually do. I got their catalog and used their basic philosophy in teaching my children for the first several years. That first year we used The Little House on the Prairie books and The Prairie Primer unit study, and added math with Math-It. We had a great time and I was SO glad we had chosen to do this. With the move to the farm just after we started, we all had a lot of new things to learn in a hands-on fashion. We started a garden, ordered ducks and geese through mail order, raised them, put up pens for them, etc., etc.

Over the years we've made changes in homeschooling. Our original, eclectic schooling eventually became somewhat stressful for me to plan and schedule, especially as we were adding more babies to our family and more animals to the farm. I wanted something that was already planned for me, but I didn't want a traditional school-at-home curriculum. Finally, I was able to start purchasing the curriculum from Sonlight. I had looked at it years earlier, and wanted to buy it because I liked the literature-based program and the fact that everything was already scheduled. But at first I felt I couldn't afford it. I didn't realize that I could have used one core for all my children and just customized their math and English. If I'd realized that before, I probably would have saved us a bunch of money over the years. Now we have all the cores and all I need to buy is new consumables for math, penmanship and occasionally one for another subject. And since I have another 15 years of homeschooling that is a great relief to me! We still customize what we do with it. We don't necessarily do everything in their plan, but even they tell you that they put more in their plan than they expect any one person to do - to give many options, and each family can do what they want with it. We also add supplemental materials and events now and then.

Keith works rotating shifts. This works wonderfully with homeschooling! Our field trips are done when he's not working some weekday and we are able to avoid the weekend crowds at zoos, museums, etc. We take our family vacations on off-peak time - usually early spring or mid-fall. We do school on Columbus Day, Presidents Day, etc., and learn about those people or events. But our birthdays are official school holidays!

Home Schooling After All These Years?

A call from a high school student came into our office a few years ago. Would we help her, she asked? She was smart, a hard worker, and serious about her education and future. Her problem was that her place of learning, the public school, wasn't helping her meet her goals anymore. Actually, it hadn't for quite awhile. This was her senior year, and now she was quitting and wanting to home school after all these years.

For a lot of people her decision just didn't make sense. They were thinking, "You've been here eleven years and now you're just three quarters away from being presented with that coveted public school diploma." She didn't value or covet it enough to continue attending six hours of classes a day with students who had largely "checked out." In her words, it was a "party atmosphere" most of the time.

She wasn't angry. She didn't describe her situation in "us" verses "them" language. She was simply ready to move on quietly, not with bitterness. She still wanted some recognition for the work she had accomplished, the grades she had earned. She wanted some direction in what final courses she should take to complete her education at this level. Her parents supported her decision.

I think what I saw in her was someone who, at the beginning of adulthood, had come to realize that school, learning and education aren't always a package deal. School is largely an artificial environment where learning sometimes takes place, and sometimes it doesn't.

That November I met with her and her family. We discussed her goals and where she saw herself in the next few years. I helped them think through the pros and cons of the decision she was about to make. I explained what it would take to meet our graduation requirements, and what books and other means she could employ to complete this phase of her education. Even though our program was still a structure, it was one with a lot more freedom and meaning.

After our meeting she picked out her books and got right to work. She didn't need any prodding. I met with her and her family a few more times that school year to look at her work and do the necessary documenting. That June, with her parents standing with her, she was presented her diploma.

Some might say she really wasn't a "home schooler." I would say in response, "Who cares what you call what she was doing." The important thing was that she wasn't afraid to seek professional help and make a decision that would change the course of her education, to "home school" after all these years!

Homeschool Transcripts - The Advantage of Homeschool Transcripts

There can be a huge advantage in making your own homeschool transcript. The advantage is that you can provide rigorous academics to your children and then reflect it on your transcript. I know that there are people out there who feel like failures - like they are doing a terrible job. But have you ever considered what failure really means?

What is the graduation rate at your public high school? Sometimes our school district talks about the incarceration rate of their high school students. How many homeschools think about incarceration? I really don't think that our definition of failure is quite like the world's definition of failure. Perhaps we are not providing a college level great books program but then again, neither are the public schools!

We are simply providing rigorous academics at the level of our children because what is really important is that you are teaching them at their level. If that means math is pre-algebra for a few years in a row then they are going to be learning more than if you pushed them beyond what they were able to do.

Another advantage is the freedom to document all these outside classes. That is one of the reasons why homeschoolers tend to have huge transcripts - they can take all of their classes, both from inside and outside a classroom, and place them on a transcript. It just looks much better on paper when your child can develop interest in things like economics or chess or other crazy stuff.

A homeschool transcript will be a way for you to identify the special giftedness and passion of your own child. Every child has their own thing. The transcript will show the individuality of your own child. Your transcript can also reflect the values and priorities of your own family.

It's also a way for you to capture all of the academics they do regardless of where they do it. So if they go to Bellevue Community College, then they do a court class, and they have music at the public school, you'll be able to pull all that together so nothing will be lost. It becomes a much more comprehensive and accurate picture of who your child really is, instead of the one-dimensional piece of paper that they might get from a public or private school.

Homeschooling High School - The Benefits of CLEP

Taking CLEP exams while homeschooling high school has many benefits for the homeschool student. Some colleges will accept the CLEP and some will not. Some will take them in varying degrees. There can be benefits with any of them. One thing to remember is to choose your colleges wisely. As an example, Seattle Pacific University will take a whole year of college by CLEP. Every time we passed a CLEP it represented many thousands of dollars to us. Not only that, even though we didn't end up using those CLEPs, they still earned us fabulous scholarships.

In the beginning we were taking CLEP exams so they would not have to pay for four full years of college. But ultimately it freed us up to be able to get that good scholarship. My boys did end up going to college for four years. They just enjoyed it more because they were able to be placed into classes even when they wouldn't necessarily be given college credit for passing a CLEP in that subject.

The confusing thing about CLEP is that there is not a national policy. Each college has its own policy on if they accept CLEP or not, what scores they accept, and how they use them if they DO accept them. That makes it really hard to write about. In other words, one college will give you college credit AND give you advance placement. Another college may not use the scores at all, and may still require an AP in the exact same subject area.

Whether you are looking at CLEP, AP or SAT 2 for high school testing you will want to make sure that your student is going to pass the test before you step foot in the door. You will want to give them a sample test, whether a general sample test, like a general CLEP exam or a specific subject test like in Chemistry. Give it to them while they are at home and where they are comfortable. Make sure that everything is going well so that you can make sure that they are going to pass it before you take it for real.

Quitting Home School Already?

The following situation is more common than you think:

"We've been homeschooling for almost three months now. Since we started he hasn't wanted to do his work. I told him I would send him back to school if he didn't listen and follow my directions. He settled down for awhile and was compliant, doing what I asked. But, it didn't last for long. Now I'm back to listening to one excuse after another for what he doesn't want to do. All I'm asking is for him to do two chores a day and complete around one page for each of the four subjects he's doing (math, language, writing, and geography). I have told him a million times that I am here if he needs help. When he asks for help, it turns out he does know what he's doing and is just pretending. I just can't make him apply himself. I really don't want to send him back to public school... but I'm really tempted. Help."

I'm sure a lot of thoughts run through your mind as you read the above. Thoughts like, could this really be true? Is this an exaggeration? How can she stand living like this? For those of you who have no experience with the above, all I can say is, again, this experience is more common than you think. And, because my wife once picked up the phone and "dialed" the local school to see if there was room for "one more," I can personally relate to this.

So, what can be done to correct this situation? Finding out that he is eight years old, here are three things I recommend:

Threats: While I don't recommend threatening to do something you know you really won't follow through with (like sending him to back to public school, unless you mean it), "collecting information" in his presence by calling or visiting may raise the anxiety level enough to stimulate compliance. And in reality, if you were unable to continue home schooling due to health or other issues, going to a public school could become a reality.

Structure: Children especially at this age need a predictable pattern. "School" should start close to the same time every day. Subjects studied should follow the same order: math, followed by penmanship, followed by reading, etc. For those who argue against such an approach, saying it is making the home too "school like," all I can say is that typically productivity and creativity are linked to discipline and structure. In other words, home schooling is often just getting your work done day in and day out. Can you adjust the schedule, and take a day off when warranted? Of course. I'm not suggesting that you should be inflexible.

I would also recommend what I call "pass the salt, pass the pepper" tones when implementing the schedule and course work. Your son needs to know that this is just the way the school work and chores are going to flow kind of tone. Avoid getting into arguments, even though it's easy to "win" them when the children are younger. As they get older, you'll find yourself "winning" less and less until your relationship with him or her crashes.

Instruction: It isn't going to work to tell him what to do, let him go to his room, and expect him to return at lunch with everything completed. At this age, home school instruction is largely driven by the parent. Yes, you can explain a math worksheet, leave him for ten to fifteen minutes and check back. A better approach would be to have him work at the kitchen table so you're close by for accountability and to teach and answer questions. The older he gets though, the less you should be needed.
